Couple on dateWhen you're writing a personal profile for a dating website, you want to make sure that you look and sound as desirable as possible, right?

But there's a fine line between selling yourself well and telling outright fibs – and new research has shown exactly what men and women lie about when they're trying to attract a partner.

According to dating site okcupid.com, men are most likely to lie about their height, while women tend to lie about their weight and build.

It seems that many men like to add a couple of inches to their actual height, with many aiming to be six feet tall - and they are also likely to be 20 per cent poorer than they claim they are.

Women tend to lie about their height too, perhaps because those who are six feet or taller are perceived to be less attractive to men or more intimidating. As a result, a five-foot four inches woman gets 60 more contacts each year than her six-foot counterpart.

And if you spot someone with a very attractive profile picture then beware. Research showed that the more attractive the picture, the more likely it is to be out-of-date.

Research showed that over a third of the hottest photos on the okcupid.com site were a year old or more, and more than twice as many hot photos are over three years old as average-looking ones.

A spokesperson for the site said: 'If you see a good-looking picture of a man over 30, that photo is very likely to be out-of-date.'

Hmmm, maybe we should stick to men under 30, then, eh?
