The ideal first-date scenario would be to walk into the room without a scrap of make-up on, looking totally fresh-faced and fabulous. But if you normally wouldn't go as far as the corner shop to buy a pint of milk without your mascara and lippy, now is probably not the best time to change the habits of a lifetime.

First-dates are nerve-wracking enough as it is, so a little bit of make-up can be just the confidence boost you need. But subtlety is the key. You want to look 'naturally' radiant (with a sneaky little helping hand)...

Wide-eyed beauty
According to body language experts and science bods, wide eyes are attractive to the opposite sex. If you want to make yours appear bigger, dab white eyeshadow at the inner corners and use eyeliner along the upper lashes only. Black liquid liner flicked out at the edges is the perfect sex-kitten look.

Don't even think about attempting false lashes. One of them is bound to start escaping mid-date. For really full lashes that don't look 'cakey' curl lashes with a lash curler then apply two coats of volumising mascara, separating lashes with a comb after each coat is dry.

First-kiss lips
Forget collagen injections - wake up with a plumper super-soft pout on the morning of the date by brushing your lips gently with an old toothbrush and slathering with lots of Vaseline or lip balm before you go to bed. Too much lipstick can look harsh ad unflattering. For lips that look as though they are naturally bursting with colour, try rubbing your finger over your lipstick and pressing the colour into your lips. For a more girlie touch, finish with a slick of clear gloss.
To avoid the old lipstick-on-teeth blunder, put your finger into your mouth, close your lips around it and slide it back out again.

Flawless complexion
Like rain at Glastonbury and coming on as soon as you go on holiday, it's Sod's law that you will get your first spot in ten years just before a first date. Don't be tempted to start prodding and squeezing or you could end up with a disaster on your hands – or rather a disaster on your face and something unspeakable on your hands.

Instead, dab with concealer after you've applied your foundation and then gently press with powder to take away the oily sheen and prevent it catching the light. Remember that spots always look magnified to you. He probably won't even notice – especially if you choose a nice dimly lit bar.

Sexy scent
A spritz of scent can be very seductive but too much perfume is worse than no perfume at all so never go for that "one more for luck" spray. Don't forget that your nose has become accustomed to the fragrance so it will seem a lot stronger to others. For a sheer veil of subtle fragrance, spray your scent in the air and then walk through the mist allowing it to fall over your skin. If it's a daytime date stick to something that's light and fresh or a scented body lotion.

First-flush glow
Fake tan should not under any circumstances look fake. Here's how to avoid the telltale signs and cheat your golden glow convincingly.

The fake faux-pas
: Orange
Avoid it: Unless you are naturally dark or olive-skinned, a deep tan will leave you looking more orange than an Oompa Loompa. For a golden glow, choose the lightest shade and layer it. You can always use a dusting of bronzer on the parts of the skin the sun would naturally kiss (nose, forehead, chin, cheekbones and chest) to boost the colour more naturally.

The fake faux-pas: Streaky
Avoid it: The key to an even streak-free tan lies in the preparation. No amount of blending will help if your skin's texture is uneven underneath. For a silky finish, exfoliate your skin first with a body scrub to remove any coarse dead skin then slather all over with a rich body lotion. Now your tan should glide on smoothly and effortlessly.

The fake faux-pas: Tanned palms and orange brows
Avoid it: No amount of time in the sun will give you tanned palms so don't let yourself down at the last hurdle. Once you've applied your tan, wash your hands thoroughly then apply a little to the backs of your hands using a cotton wool pad. Dampen another cotton wool pad with a few drops of water and use to remove any tan from your eyebrows and the base of your heels.
