They may not have had Ann Summers in the Stone Ages but a recent find by archaeologists in Sweden suggest that they knew a thing or two about sex toys. The team of archaeologists dug up a 11cm (4 inch) long and 2cm (1 inch) wide phallus carved from a stag's antler from the banks of the Göta Canal near Motala in Sweden's Östergötland province.
Sara Gummesson, one of the archaeologists, said: "At first I thought it was just an antler that had been worked on and I was going to take a closer look at it. But when I held it up I wasn't able to stop laughing."
It is thought to be between 6,000 and 8,000 years old and, while it is obvious what the statue represents, experts are still uncertain what its purpose was.
It has been speculated that the phallus was used as a sex aid to pleasure Stone Age priestesses, but archaeologists have been reticent about attributing any sexual functions to it so far, claiming that it could have been intended as a fertility symbol.
Swedish Heritage Board archeologist Goran Gruber said: "We do think it's at least some sort of phallus, but I couldn't say for sure what it was actually used for."
And Swedish archaeologist Dr. Martin Rundkvist said: "There are many non-dildoish uses for which it may have been intended.
"Without doubt anyone alive at the time of its making would have seen the penile similarities just as easily as we do today."
However, this particular priapus is not by any means the oldest sex toy in existence.
A stone phallus was discovered in Ulm, Germany that dates back 28,000 years and, due to its lifelike size, it is assumed that its function was as a sex toy.
What do you think? Was this phallus a fertility symbol or a sex toy? Leave your comments below...
